Weight loss or fat loss
With the focus being on weight loss, the dieter almost always achieves his or her goal but is never able to sustain it. The dieter is able to get lots of weight off in the shortest possible time with the least amount of effort but he has no clue as to what proportion of it is fat.
Most of the time, a large proportion of it is muscle and water. Water and muscle loss is detrimental to long-term weight loss. When you lose muscle, your metabolism gets suppressed and the body’s hormonal balance is disturbed. This primes the body for regaining all the lost weight.
Fast short-term weight loss but slow long-term weight loss
When people focus their efforts on weight loss, they get fast short-term weight loss but the weight comes back with a vengeance. They are soon on the lookout for the next diet or weight loss program to go through the whole weight loss adventure again. In the long-term, it is a never ending attempt at weight loss.
Contrast this with losing fat. When you focus on fat loss, you only have to lose the weight once. When you focus on weight loss, you will probably spend you whole life doing it like what dieters are mostly doing.
Sustainable weight loss has a limit
If you are looking to lose fat really fast, bear in mind that it is only as fast as 2 to 3 pounds of weight per week. Anything faster than this and you will lose muscle or water and the weight will come back before you know it. Is this the type of weight loss that you really want?
The point to emphasize that sustainable weight loss has a limit. If you want to be able to sustain the weight loss, you cannot be losing more than 2 to 3 pounds of pure fat a week.
