Video transcript of Alcohol and Weight Loss
Hello I am Suresh V and I am Paramjit and we are from the Correct Weight Loss team. Today we are going to talk about the effects of alcohol on fat loss.
I think this is a very interesting topic because a lot of people want to lose weight but at the same time drink alcohol. They know alcohol does something to their weight but they are not aware of the exact consequences
Alcohol becomes the primary fuel in your body
When you consume alcohol, it becomes the primary fuel in your body. In other words, that is the first thing that the body starts burning for fuel.
[starts at 0:00:46.4]
The minute you take alcohol, your body stops burning fat or carbohydrates. These macronutrients are stored as fat as the body continues burning alcohol. Alcohol is like rocket fuel. The moment you consume it, the body wants to burn it first. Like you rightfully said Suresh, every other macronutrient is stored because the body has rocket fuel to burn. The body behaves this way probably because alcohol is toxic to the body and the body wants to get rid of it fast.
[0:01:22.8] The other thing to be aware of is that alcohol is quite high in calories. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories. 1 gram of carbohydrate or protein has 4 calories. 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories. So there are lots of calories in alcohol itself. Alcohol is not only calorie dense, it also stops the burning of all the other macronutrients in its presence. Imagine what happens when you consume alcohol with meals. First you have all the extra alcoholic calories. Secondly, all those calories that you eat are going to be stored as fat.
Alcohol increases appetite
Alcohol also induces more hunger in you. It is a double or even triple whammy. Researchers have found that even a single drink of vodka can reduce fat burning by 80% for 24 to 48 hours. So if you have a drink now, you may not burn much fat for the next 24 hours. That is not good news especially if you are trying to lose fat.
You have to cut your drinks to lose weight
If you want to lose weight to get a beautiful and ideal body, try to stop drinking alcohol. Do this at least for a certain duration. Once you have reached a certain body shape that you like, you could then take an occasional drink.
You need to earn the right to drink alcohol. The way to earn the right to drink is to make sure that you have raised your metabolism. You must have exercised and created a large enough calorie deficit that the alcoholic drinks would not do much damage to your weight loss efforts.
One way to earn the right to drink is by building enough muscle mass irrespective of whether you are a lady or a man. Once you have enough muscle mass, there would be minimal damage if you drink once in a while.
Drink alcohol in moderation
The other thing to remember is that a lot of people get very put off when you tell them to stop drinking. So what you can do is to reduce drinking to maybe once a week. Bear in mind that a drink of vodka can sabotage fat burning for up to 24 hours. As long as the alcohol is within your body, there is not going to be much fat burning.
Alcohol disrupts your hormonal balance
Research also shows that alcohol affects your hormonal balance. It affects your testosterone levels. This is for guys as well as ladies. When your testosterone levels are lowered, your fat burning is affected. Alcohol affects testosterone and cortisol levels. It raises cortisol levels.
[0:04:19.8] Cortisol is a fat storage hormone. It promotes the storage of abdominal fat. Not only does alcohol become the primary fuel that stops other macronutreints from being burned, it also upsets the hormonal system. There are lots of processes involved that keep compounding the prevention of fat burning when you drink alcohol.
Male testicle breaks down alcohol
Another interesting thing about alcohol relates to men. We mentioned earlier that alcohol affects testosterone levels. The male testicle actually breaks down alcohol. That puts a lot of pressure on the male testicle if you take too many drinks.
So in other words when the testicles are busy breaking down alcohol, testosterone production stops or slows down. That is even worse for men. That is why you have some men that have female characteristics such as breasts. They also have a pot belly and lots of abdominal fat. All this is because testosterone is affected by all alcohol consumption
So guys, be careful, you want to be superman, don’t drink too much alcohol. They say that a real man drinks. But a drink does not make you a real man. It takes your manhood away from you
Be smart about your drinks
Be smart about your drinks. Be aware of the effects of alcohol and weight loss. Drink intelligently but most importantly, earn the right to drink. You have to pay the price. Follow the correct weight loss principles. Get to a reasonable target body shape.to earn the right to drink. Drink moderately and you wont do too much damage on your weight loss efforts.
Most of all, be informed. From the correct weight loss team, this time do it right
