Why Losing Weight is So Hard
Have you ever wondered why losing weight is so hard? One of the very simple yet profound concepts to grasp when trying to get in shape is the quality and quantity of weight loss. These two cannot co-exist and really sit on the opposite end of the pole.
Quality of Weight Loss
High quality weight loss occurs when all of it originates from losing fat. High quality weight loss has negligible or almost no muscle loss. Low quality weight loss occurs when there is lots of water and muscle loss. When there is high quality weight loss, there is also accompanying health benefits. It helps boost metabolism. It also helps normalize hormones to their normal safe working levels. As an example, it helps bring insulin levels down while boosting potent fat burning hormones such as the human growth hormone.
Most people are caught up with weight loss quantity
The one thing that is on everyone’s mind is how much weight they are losing. This is exactly why most people fail at long-term weight loss. They may succeed in short-term weight loss but they just can’t keep the weight off. Oprah is one example of such dieters. She had successfully brought her weight down but just could not hold it at that level. When someone is obsessed with weight loss quantity, they start compromising. They start losing lots of water and muscle which is really detrimental to health and long-term weight loss sustainability.
Never compromise quantity for quality
The first and foremost goal of any attempt to get in shape must be high quality weight loss. Low quality weight loss is really an illusion that most dieters helplessly fall for. It is an illusion because it is so temporary. People want to get the weight off as fast as possible and that is why it is so tempting to go for methods that can offer such results. People who go for such low quality weight loss spend their whole lives trying to lose weight unsuccessfully.
Never compromise weight loss quality for weight loss quantity and the process of getting in shape will become easier.

Great post, I’ve been helping poeple lose weight for 15 years and one of my hardest jobs is to get my clients to realize that slow, steady but permanent weight loss is the way to go. The goal for my female clients is 3/4 of a pound a week and for my males it is 1 pound per week.Losing body fat while preserving muscle is not a fast process. People need to realize this. I think a lot of the fad diet books and tv shows lend to false expectations of losing 5 or even 10 lbs a week. This is not realistic. Slow and steady wins the race. Thanks for a great article Dr. Tom Halton http://www.drtomhalton.blogspot.com

This is a really good post. I have never heard anyone discuss quality and quantity when it came to weight loss before. There are a lot of people looking for quick ways to lose weight but you give them something else to think about. I always looked at losing weight as being complicated because of the lack of motivation. Thanks!
