You can effortlessly lose weight with some motivation and a deeper understanding of why you are doing what you are doing. A primary motivation such as wanting to lose 10 pounds will only get you as far as your weight loss target. What happens after you have achieved your weight loss target. Without a new or secondary goal, you would probably lose focus and the weight will just come back on again.
This is why it is important to have an ongoing set of goals to help you keep your weight within your target. Another important aspect is education. The more you know about weight loss, the better will be your compliance to exercise and nutrition guidelines. You will know why you are doing what you are doing. You understand the repercussions of not exercising or having a sugary drink.
With adequate understanding, you will be motivated to pursue even bigger goals. Education feeds your motivation. When you are motivated, you will seek more education. You end up getting into an upward spiral that will allow effortless weight management. We have spoken about education and motivation. What we are going to do today is show how education and motivation are sort of inter related. One feeds onto the other. It creates a virtuous upward spiral. It takes your mind and heart from wherever it is to a level where you can not only achieve your weight loss goals but also sustain it for a life time.
Once you have enough weight loss education, that very education serves to motivate you to effortlessly be on a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle helps keep your weight off.
Primary Motivation and Secondary Motivation
You are driven by your primary motivation. You may want to lose 10 pounds, look good in a pair of jeans, be more energetic or be healthier. The primary goal is what motivates you to start your journey. Weight loss is just the beginning. Your primary goal helps you achieve your weight loss but it is not enough to sustain it.
So while you have your primary goals, you also need some secondary goals. These secondary goals help you to keep on keeping on. After achieving your primary goal of losing 10 pounds you could pursue a secondary goal of increasing your fitness level. This keeps you going and helps manage your weight over the long-term.
Educate yourself
At the same time, educate yourself about why you are doing what you are doing. Also learn how your actions are affecting your waistline. When you have a deeper understanding, you are motivated to stay on track. You understand better why you are doing what you are doing. It is just not brute force. It is force with a little more intelligence. Therefore it becomes smarter work.
Mental pain when there is a deeper understanding
I (Suresh) have been doing this for such a long time that if I go off track, I feel bad. Mentally I am tortured. The mental pain of not doing the exercise is worse than the physical pain of doing it. The physical pain is temporary. It lasts maybe 1 or 2 minutes for any particular exercise. At most, it may last 45 minutes for a continuous session. But if I don’t exercise, the psychological pain is a 24 hour burden. This is because I understand how not exercising affects me physically.
To avoid 24 hours of psychological pain, I (Suresh) would rather finish the 40 minute exercise session and sleep easy after that. Most people never reach that level of understanding. They have not crossed this threshold.
7 keys are the relief from psychological burden of having unhealthy habits
For most people, an exercise session or certain nutritional advise may be a burden. Trying to adopt the principles of the 7 keys of correct weight loss may be a burden. For me (Suresh), these 7 keys are my relief from the psychological burden of not following a healthy lifestyle. These keys guide me so that I am able to enjoy life to the fullest.
With increased level of weight loss knowledge, understanding leads to obedience. With most diet programs, it is obedience before understanding.
Understanding prevents you from carrying out foolish acts
It is impossible for you to do something foolish if you know what you are doing is a foolish act. With adequate weight loss education, you can reach a deep level of understanding. If you don’t have that level of understanding, you are not aware that you are being foolish. You are not aware that consuming alcohol with a fatty meal will send all the calories to your butt. You will not know that skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do to sabotage your weight loss efforts. With deeper understanding, you will not do these foolish acts.
I (Jasvin) understand what you are trying to say. In the last one year, I have started exercising in the morning. If I miss an exercise session, the guilty feeling haunts me for the entire day. As Suresh said, this happens because I (Jasvin) know how missing exercise sessions affect me.
You become self-driven with education
People always talk about self discipline as an externally forced effort. This type of thinking actually shows a lack of understanding. This is never the case if you have basic weight loss knowledge. People look at self discipline as vows that they force upon themselves. Once you reach or certain depth of understanding, self discipline becomes effortless. You become self driven.
Then it is no more forced discipline on yourself. When your understanding is deep, certain acts become effortless because not doing them seem foolish.
Seek motivation and continue to educate yourself
We always encourage people wanting to lose weight to seek motivation but also not forget about education. The act of educating yourself motivates you. When you are motivated, you would probably look for more information. This upward spiral will take you to a stage where not following a healthy lifestyle becomes foolish.
It is at this point that you are free for the rest of your life. You can sustain the beautiful body that you have worked so hard for. Until your actions are effortless, your weight loss cannot be sustainable. The weight will just come back on again.
