Why Marriage Affects Your Weight
People who are married will find that they have more similarities as time goes by. More often than not, they will like and do the same things. This is one of the reasons why research has found that married couples have similar BMI levels after some time. Marriage affects your weight because you tend to inculcate the habits of your spouse.
Spouses Become Alike
In a study published in the Journal of Obesity Research in 1999, researchers looked into the effects of marriage on obesity levels. The researchers reviewed the data of 376 pairs of spouses. This data was from a sample of 1487 participants in the 1988 Campbell’s Survey follow-up of the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey.
The researchers concluded that there was a significant risk in increase in fatness in the general Canadian population as a result of spouses living together after marriage. The researchers found a tendency for weight gain after marriage. The study also showed that spouses became very much alike after living together over time.
Marriage Affects Your Weight
In another study, researchers wanted to assess the relationship between marriage and weight gain. 1200 men and 1300 women participated in the study. The findings were published in an article in the Journal of Obesity Research.
The researchers found that the couples had quite similar BMI after 2 years. The researchers suggested 2 possibilities for this. The sharing of the same environment was one of the reasons. Couples generally have the same lifestyles. They eat the same food. Another possibility is what researchers call assortative mating. This is when a person looks for a mate that has similar body type. An overweight person would look for an overweight partner. Conversely, a lean person would look for a lean partner.
Your Spouse’s Habits Rub On To You
There is a strong tendency for your spouse’s habits to rub on to you. The habits of each partner rubs on the other and both end up having an almost similar lifestyle. The eating and exercising habits will be similar which will result in similar levels of weight loss or weight gain. Ultimately, marriage affects your weight.

Paramjit , what do you think about the “comfort factor?” I think some people, once they’ve found their partner and settled down, allow themselves to get out of shape. They feel comfortable and secure in their relationship, and since they feel they don’t have to be so physically attractive to find a mate, they slack off on exercise and eating right.

I guess marriage should be a good reason for people to stay fit so that they would stay beautiful in the eyes of their partner.
