Does Juicing Work for Weight Loss
There is a lot of misconception about juicing for weight loss. Juicing retains all the vitamins and nutrients of the fruit except one. The nutrient left out is fibre. The removal of fibre via the juicing process causes fruit juice to behave very differently in the body as compared to when fruit is eaten whole.
Effects of Juicing for Weight Loss
Whole fruit is better for weight loss as compared to fruit juice. An interesting study was published in the Journal Appetite. Participants who ate a whole apple before a meal consumed fewer calories in the meal as compared to when they drank apple juice.
In another study, researchers investigated the effects of consuming either oranges and orange juice. All meals had the same carbohydrate content. The findings of this study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The researchers found that satiety was greater when the participants consumed whole fruit and not fruit juice. Eating whole fruit also delayed the return of appetite and hunger. The researchers also reported that eating whole oranges spiked blood insulin levels less than when the participants consumed orange juice. The researchers concluded that the fibre content of fruit blunts the body’s insulin response to the fruit sugar.
Juicing for Weight Loss not Effective
Another study was published in the Journal Lancet. 10 healthy participants were asked to consume an apple meal with each meal containing 60g of carbohydrates. The participants were asked to consume the apples whole, in the form of fibre-free apple juice or apple purée.
The researchers assessed the satiety levels after the meals were consumed. Fibre-free apple juice could be absorbed by the body eleven times faster than whole apples and four times faster than apple purée. The researchers found that the highest level of satiety was achieved after eating whole apples. This was followed by purée and apple juice came out last. Juicing for weight loss may not be an effective strategy as it is not able to provide adequate satiety levels.
The removal of fibre from food results in unhealthy insulin spikes. It also decreases satiety and disturbs blood glucose balance. This is probably due to insulin spikes.
Insulin is a potent fat storage hormone. When excess insulin is present in the blood stream, your body is inclined to store fat and not burn it.
No Benefit in Juicing for Weight Loss
Fruit should be eaten whole for maximum health benefit. Even when the fibre is disrupted as in purée, the health benefits are compromised. Fibre is an essential nutrient in fruit. The body requires fibre to manage blood sugar and insulin levels after eating fruit. Fibre is also essential to maintain satiety and cut hunger levels.
Eat your fruit whole. This is the only way that you can get the most weight loss benefits.

I agree, eating fruits whole is more healthier for you then juicing them. you can eat just one apple and get more vitamins and fiber as compared to juicing maybe 5 apples to get just one serving. juicing fruits and vegetables togther can be a good way to get the servings you should have every day, but not for losing weight.

Thanks for your feedback. We have made to believe that fruit juice is healthy. It is if you consider the nutrients but somehow when the fibre is removed, fruit behaves in very strange ways. It definitely works against weight loss.

I have consumed raw veggie juice because 1993 when I was ‘given’ 12 months to live with cancer. Since that time I’ve drunk around 3,800 litres-give or take a few hundred litres- of this miracle drink. These days at 59, I feel vibrant, fit and alive! My arthritis – that I was told would affect me for life – has gone and my blood pressure is perfect. And I still have all my hair! Can raw veggie juice do all this? I believe so. It just requirements time and a commitment to being well. I am NOT fantatical about raw juices; just passionate. And here is really a tip: Get a really good juicer as it will save time and produce a much better quality drink. Appreciate and be well

I personally love juicing because I consume vegetables along with fruits that I would never eat just like that. I have always been a picky eater specially when it comes down to green leafy veggies juicing makes that easier and I feel healthier I am eating veggies that I never had before. I know eating the whole fruit and vegetable is much more beneficial but for me it’s consuming them in a juice or not at all.

It all depends what your objectives are. If you are looking to lose weight, this article just says that you should refrain from juicing until your goals are met. On the other hand, juicing gives the body a sugar shock. The body was not meant to consume fruit this way. You may be getting the nutritional benefit of fruit but at the same time the negative effect of fructose overload in the body.

I agree with Alida, My brother in law was diagnosed with prostate cancer and also decided to go on a juicing diet and I must say there was a big improvement in his health. The benifits of juicing should be advertised all over. Anyway thanks for an informative post and comments.
