Overcome your weight loss obstacles

There are many challenges with losing weight and most of these challenges seem to be mental. Some of the hardest battles are fought deep within the silent chambers of our souls. A lot of people never get over these mental challenges. Some are aware of these mental traps and some are not. Here is a list of 9 obstacles that may be holding you back from achieving your dream body.

1.  Waiting for The Right Time

A lot of people know that they should do something about their weight but haven’t found the right time to start. They are probably waiting for their children to go to school or waiting for the workload in the office to reduce. There could be hundreds of excuses. The right time to start is now.

2.  Procrastinating

Procrastination is different from waiting for the right time. People who procrastinate really want to start losing weight but just do not have the power to bring themselves to start. They keep putting it off. Make a decision to start. Mark that day in the calendar and do not postpone it.

3.  Looking for Quick Fixes

This one of the biggest mental challenges for most people. They keep thinking that there is a diet or a pill available that could give them fast and effortless weight loss. They keep getting distracted with looking for the ideal solution. If there was a quick and easy way to lose weight, Oprah would have found it by now. Forget about quick fixes.

4.  Very Weak Commitment to Losing Weight

A lot of people want to lose weight but don’t really want it bad enough. Watching television may be more important than going to the gym. An extra half hour of sleep is more important than waking up in the morning and going for a jog. These people do want weight loss. They just do not want it bad enough. It’s something that’s nice to have and not something they must have.

5.  Losing Weight For Someone Else

Do not try to lose weight for your spouse or for anyone else other than you. If you are not doing it for yourself, it’s going to be a long and hard journey.

6.  Lack of Knowledge

A lot of people do not want to take the trouble to educate themselves about losing weight. They do not understand that weight loss should come purely from fat loss and not from the loss of muscle or water. The information is readily available. The more well-informed one is, the more likely that one will stick to his or her weight loss efforts. When you know why you are doing what you are doing, the tendency of persevering is higher.

7.  Don’t Really Know What to Aim For

Most people want weight loss but do not have a concrete goal or target to aim for. They want to lose some weight but do not realize what goal to set. If they set a weight loss goal, they may achieve it but at the expense of losing muscle and water. This sets them up for rebound weight gain. They should aim for fat loss and measure body fat percentage instead of just measuring weight on the weighing scales.

8.  Have Not Made a Plan

There is no way that anyone can have sustained weight loss without a plan. There must be a plan for exercise. Are you going to exercise 3 or 4 days a week? What sort of diet are you going to follow? How are you tracking progress? Without a plan, success is impossible.

9.  No Contingency Plan

There are bound to be slip-ups. That’s part of being human. We should allow for contingencies such as missing exercises or busting our diets. There must be a plan for damage control. If you miss an exercise day, why not do an extra session on the weekend. What you do to bring yourself up after a fall is important.

Do you face any of the above obstacles?

There is no time like the present to lose weight. The only way to lose weight is to take responsibility for yourself! Our health is our most important asset. For many people, being overweight is associated with being uncomfortable in their own skin. To assist with weight control; keep a daily food journal and every time the urge to snack is felt, first drink a large glass of clear water. This simple act will help you to eat less. Water will soon become one of your best friends. The major reason so many people in America are overweight is because we eat too much for comfort! It does not hurt to treat ourselves with something special once in a while, what is necessary is that we limit our portions and do not overeat! It is also necessary to keep our body properly hydrated, so drink a full glass of water with each meal or snack.
