Its the small things that we do every day that matter. It all adds up. Nothing is neutral. Everything that we do, either moves us closer to our goal or away from it. The concept of maintenance is a myth. This applies to someone trying to lose weight, increase fitness or even the dude who wants to build more muscles.
The challenge is that we all have a short memory with regards to our day to day activities. One or two days is the furthest back we can probably remember where our diet is concerned. We also tend to be overly positive whenever questioned about our dietary habits.
“I don’t really eat much and yet I can’t loose weight”, someone told me the other day. Upon examining in more detail, that person was actually eating a substantial amount. It only became evident when she started writing down what she was eating. Even she was surprised. Researchers have found that people tend to underestimate the amount that they eat and overestimate the amount of exercise that they do.
The way around this is greater awareness of our food choices. Writing down what you eat creates awareness that otherwise would not had been evident. Most people tend to be on autopilot as they go about their day to day activities consuming one meal after another. Each meal is taken as it comes. There is no looking back at how and what one has eaten the day before. There is also no planning of meals for the day to come.
We need to be conscious and aware when we put food into our mouths. When it comes to eating, just ask yourself if the food you are planning to put into your mouth is going to help or hurt your weight loss efforts. Stopping, questioning and thinking of the answer will transfer control to your rational brain. Most of the time, this is all that is needed to make a sound and rational dietary decision that helps your weight loss efforts.
Stopping to think, takes blood away from the emotional or reptilian brain and sends it to the rational brain.
There will still be that one group of emotional eaters who would not benefit from such a practice. Their emotions and hormones will not permit this practice to work. Yet there is no harm in trying. Stopping to ask yourself the repercussions of eating any food will inevitably force you to make more sound decisions. It forces you to be aware of what you are eating.
If you do go ahead and eat that ice-cream when you knew you shouldn’t have, at least you were aware of it. The more aware you become the easier it would be to make the right decision the next time. As awareness of our actions increase, so will the soundness of our decisions. Sooner than later you will wake from the lull of unhealthy food choices.
Raising your awareness when eating is essential for losing weight correctly so that your weight loss is healthy and sustainable.
