This feeling of discomfort comes from the knowledge that the new challenge will require change. This change will be uncomfortable as it requires a person to step out of his or her comfort zone.

A person will be faced with all this thoughts before even lifting a finger. The body and our primitive brain wants to survive with the least amount of effort. It will look for the path of least resistance. This is not anyone’s fault. This is the way our in-built survival system works the best. The cave man did minimum work to get food and thereafter conserved energy. Unfortunately, we have a prehistoric survival system in an ultra modern world.

Anything with the slightest hint of discomfort will be resisted by the body and the primitive part of our brain. Unfortunately, no amount of success comes without discomfort. You almost always have to sacrifice something in return for success. It could be time, money or even sweat and effort.

It is thus normal to be afraid when trying to conquer a formidable goal. That little voice in your head will try its best to discourage you. Yet, you must prevail. Your toughest battles are not fought in the physical world. Your toughest battles are fought deep with the silent chambers of our souls. It is in these chambers that you need to prevail over doubt.

One of the most formidable tasks anyone could undertake is to start on a fitness initiative. One might want to do so to lose weight or become healthier or any other reason which appeals to him or her. Like any formidable task, there will be all kinds of doubts creeping up before starting. For every valid reason to go for the goal, there could be a hundred other reasons on why one should not.

“Will I have enough time for exercise”?

“Will I be depriving my children of my time”?

“Maybe I should wait until the workload in the office reduces”.

The only thing that can save you is a decision. A firm, solid and unwavering decision that you commit yourself to the goal at hand. In this case, that you commit yourself to achieving your fitness goals, whatever these may be. That one single decision can banish a thousand doubts. That one single decision will be half the battle won.

When you make a solid and firm commitment to follow through with your goals, strange things happen. All of a sudden, the goal starts to seem possible. The earlier challenges do not seem to be that formidable anymore. You suddenly feel a gush of energy rushing through your body. Everything is possible. All that comes with a meager utterance of the words “I will do it!”. “I will see it through”.

Once you have made up your mind, the goal is yours for the taking. It’s not a question of “if” you will achieve your fitness goal. Rather, it’s a question of “when” you will achieve it. That one single decision will banish all the monsters that were eating you from within, deep in your soul. That one decision is the first of a thousand steps which might be necessary. But the first step probably consumed the same amount of energy of the rest of the 999 steps put together.

So go ahead and make that decision to persevere. Make a pledge to yourself. If you don’t trust yourself, make a public pledge to your spouse or a friend. They will keep you honest to your pledge. But most of all, make that decision. Then go out there and make it happen.
