Do you know why the success rate for sustained weight loss is less than 10%. Many minor reasons come to mind such as wrong diet, lack of exercise, hormonal imbalances, aging amongst others. But one of the major reasons which can probably overcome most of the minor reasons, is the wrong mindset.
The purpose of the Correct Weight Loss blog is not to educate people with the wrong mindset. Instead, its to to educate people with the right mindset irrespective of weight challenges. Sustainable weight loss is achievable by people who are teachable irrespective of their weight challenges.
Intelligence is not how much one knows but instead how teachable one is. Intelligence is how one is able to “un-learn” wrong and obsolete ideas to make a clearing in the mind for the right ideas.
The earlier articles including “Attitude of receptivity for Correct Weight Loss”, “What Motivates Some People to Exercise and Not Others” and many more categorized under Mind/Motivation of the Correct Weight Loss blog are designed to make the teaching more effective.
We are so used to informational education which only involves the mind but most of us are not used to transformational education. Transformational education involves the mind, heart & being. As I mentioned in my earlier article, informational education is psychologically cheap but transformational education is psychologically arduous because it requires an openness to let go of old ways of thinking or habits so that new ways of thinking and habits can flourish. This is similar to clearing a garden of weeds so that beautiful flowers can grow.
Transformational education cannot take effect until, certain old contradictory information or habit are first cleared. When the cup is full nothing more can fill it. It is the same with transformational education. Because it’s influence is mental & emotional, clearing wrong notions about weight loss is critical before correct notions can take root and grow to impact the individual positively.
The bright side to this is that once the transformational education reaches a certain level of growth, the physical, mental & emotional activities required to sustain a healthy lifestyle becomes easier and easier. The mistake most people do is that they ignore the transformational education part (short term psychological difficulty) and try to change their physical activities, diet etc. This is like putting the cart before the horse.
By all means begin your Correct Weight Loss activity immediately but at the same time begin your transformational education by reading, reflecting and practicing activities that positively impact you not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. This will help you overcome the inertia to change that this new lifestyle requires. If done correctly & totally, with acceptance rather than resistance, the transformational education will enable the new lifestyle to be sustained with minimum psychological strain. In fact you will reach the threshold (Suresh’s Threshold) where the psychological pain of not following a healthy lifestyle is greater than the pain of following it.
At this point, the self discipline to sustain the new lifestyle requires very little effort because it arises from a deep understanding of why one needs to act in a particular manner. This act becomes more natural and is a form of freedom because you become the master of your life. This is very different compared to most situations where externally induced discipline is imposed to create a healthy lifestyle which is a form of slavery. We innately resist all forms of slavery and always move towards freedom.
The lifestyle activities may be the same but with deeper understanding via transformational education, we move from slave to master, from slavery to freedom. This is when correct weight loss provides sustained results for the long term. When the results are not only impressive but also sustainable which is the way of the intelligent person.
