The race is on for an obesity drug that helps participants shed weight without much effort. The race for such a drug comes as no surprise since its a market expected to grow almost 5 fold in the next 5 years according to a statement by Decision Resources. It found that the obesity drug market in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan will increase from $478 million in 2006 to more than $2.7 billion in 2016. The market will grow most rapidly in the United States, where sales will increase from $222 million in 2006 to nearly $2 billion in 2016.
According to Daily Finance, participants who took high doses of a promising new drug called drug Lorcaserin over a year lost only 3.1 percent more of their body weight than those who took a placebo. The requirement by federal regulators is to have a difference of at least 5% over those who took placebos.
According to Forbes, another biotech company called Vivus recently announced the results of its test trials. the drug from Vivus increased weight loss by 8% to 9% over placebo at its HIGHEST DOSE which meets the requirements of the regulators for approval. It was also reported to have lots of side effects, including nausea and constipation. Another drug called Acomplia was being promoted as the next big solution to obesity. It apparently could have psychiatric side effects, including suicide.
Those who are waiting for a magic pill that will take away all their weight loss woes had better start looking for Plan B. It does not seem like there is going to be anything coming in the form of drugs in the near future. Anyone who embarks on a proper exercise and healthy eating regime would have a completely transformed body in a year, depending on the level of obesity. This is minus all the nasty side-effects that are present in these drugs.
Anyone wanting to lose weight, should do it correctly once and for all. If there was a magic pill or diet for weight loss, Oprah would have found it by now.
