Weight Loss is Simple But its Not Easy – Part 1
Weight loss is simple but it’s not easy. It’s simple because all that’s required is a small caloric deficit to get consistent weight loss. It’s not easy because your body will fight you tooth and nail to hold on to your body fat. I have the utmost admiration for people who were overweight and have loss the weight correctly. As I have said earlier, correct weight loss simply means losing fat while maintaining or building on one’s muscle mass. Here below is one success story of a school mate of mine who achieved commendable results with the principles of correct weight loss.
Sivanesan’s Story
Basically, I had 2 major problems with my body. I was fat and I was really fat……but I was in complete denial. I would look into the mirror with my neck stretched out so I couldn’t see the unusually large double chin overflowing down my neck. And I wore black and brown T-shirts for the ‘slimming’ effect. Yeah, some of you may be able to relate to this.
Being overweight made it difficult for me to select the clothes that I liked on display. I would see something cool on a mannequin. But none of these clothes would fit me, no thanks to my bulging midsection. My condition was so bad that I even found it extremely uncomfortable to tie my shoe laces. I dreaded doing even mundane tasks such as bending over to pick up things or squatting. My knee joints also hurt when I walked up the stairs or for long distances.
Deteriorating Health but no time for exercise
My health was also deteriorating fast. My doctor told me that my triglycerides were at an alarming 4.5. Blood sugar levels showed that I had passed the threshold that categorized me as a diabetic.
Finding time for exercise had always been my excuse. I travel a long way to work, which means I wake up at 5am. I get to work by 730am and leave by about 545pm. I am back at home by 730pm. After my shower and dinner, its close to 845pm, and I am just too tired to do much. I am usually reduced to reading a few emails until I doze off in front of the computer. Living life was a chore.
The Fork in the Road
It was on a trip to Japan that I realized what a fat slob I had become. My photos with the group were extremely unflattering. Seeing myself in those photos brought about a sudden awakening. I finally came to terms with it. I ended all denials and excuses. This was the best thing that could have happened to me. I immediately when to the doctor for a diagnosis and this is where he confirmed that my blood sugar was indeed high. I was faced with a choice of either losing weight or settle with the prospect of possibly being on medication for the rest of my life. This was indeed the fork in the road for me. I decided to do something about my health. I decided that if it was going to be, it would be up to me. I embarked on a regiment of healthy eating and exercise.
The discomfort when I first when to the gym in the gym attire was unimaginable. I looked like an overweight cow in shorts. The initial battles are all fought deep within our souls. This is where we fight our toughest battles, quietly. In Part 2, Sivanesan tells us how he triumphed in these battles and was able to reclaim his health.
