Rebound Weight Gain – Why Mary's Weight Keeps Yo-yo-ing (Part 1)
Losing weight is not the biggest challenge when trying to get in shape. The biggest challenge is keeping it off. A lot of people can loose weight but only a handful of people can keep it off. Rebound weight gain can be very demoralizing. Why does weight rebound?
The main reason people gain weight after successfully losing it is because of their paradigm of weight loss. Paradigm essentially means your worldview of an issue. You can think of it as the lens with which you see the world. The lens with which you see weight loss may differ with the lens with which other see it.
A lot of people see weight loss as a destination rather than a journey.
The problem and the solution is in that one statement. I suggest you go back and re-read that statement and let it slowly sink in. Let me try and differentiate between the two as clearly as possible.
Seeing Weight Loss as a Destination – Mary’s Weight Loss Initiative
Mary weighs 155 pounds (70kgs) . She wants to achieve a target weight of 130 pounds (59 kgs). Mary sees this 130 pounds as a “GOAL”. It’s the target that she must ultimately reach for the grand prize of having the body that she always wanted.
Being human, she wants to reach this the fastest possible way. She is willing to diet or starve or go on a low carbohydrate diet. She will do what ever it takes because it is a short term measure. She needs to just hunker down and keep at it until her target weight is achieved. She does not want to exercise if dieting alone can get her to her target weight.
After much persuasion from her health conscious friend Mindy, Mary has decided to start exercising as well. Mary hates to exercise but she will do it anyway as its only a temporary measure. She can stop or reduce exercise intensity once her goal is reached.
Mary’s Weight Came Back With a Vengeance
Like any weight loss initiative, Mary put in tremendous effort into achieving her target weight. And achieve it she did.
Life begin to get back to normal after that. The following week was hectic and she missed all her exercise sessions. A new project came up and she had to compromise on a eating habits. Just 2 weeks ago when she had not achieved her target weight, she would had packed her lunch from home. 2 weeks ago, she would had woken up earlier in the morning to make sure her exercise was out of the way. She compromised because there were no more goals to achieve after her target weight had been achieved.
Mary’s weight loss initiative was a destination. Once the goal was reached, she went back to her normal life. She did not see the necessity of exercise now that she had dropped a few dress sizes. But before she knew it, her weight slowly crept back. Before long she had put it all back again. It came back faster than she had lost it.
Correct Weight Loss is sustainable weight loss. Your ability to sustain weight loss really depends on your outlook of weight loss. Treat it as a destination and you will most likely regain the weight once your target weight has been achieved. In Part 2, read about Mindy’s long termed view of weight loss.
