A lot of people put their bodies through excruciating diets only to find “a flat stomach” as elusive as ever. Giving up in frustration, these people say that diets do not work. Do diets work? Well, yes and no.
Dieting – What does not work
Starvation diets do not really work, yet this is one of the first steps taken by someone wanting to get a flat stomach. Skipping meals and reducing food consumption to the point of starvation makes it harder for someone to get a flat stomach.
While reducing food consumption is the right step, reducing food consumption beyond 10-20% of your daily energy intakes is what should be avoided. Everyone’s body has an inbuilt switch that goes off when it senses that one is eating less than one’s usual energy requirements. The tolerance is 10-20% and can be different for different people.
Going beyond this tolerance activates your starvation response. Your body thinks that there is a famine. Food must be short. Why else would a living being deprive itself of food? Little does it know that you are doing this to flatten your stomach. We have a prehistoric survival system within us that is operating in this ultra-modern world.
The body would respond to the starvation response by holding on tightly to your fat stores at the hips and around the stomach. This is why dieting causes a bulge in your stomach. In women, the bulge is even more prominent as nature has designed the woman’s body to store fat around the hips and the abdomen for the eventuality that she may get pregnant. This fat will then come in handy for the unborn child.
Dieting – What Works
Reducing food consumption is definitely a factor on the path to a flat stomach. But one has to do it with patience. One needs to be aware of the 10-20% food reduction tolerance. Coupled with a good exercise program, one can expect to lose up to 2 lbs per week. This slow and steady weight loss ensures that there is no stubborn fat storage in the abdomen.
Its very easy to recognize chronic women dieters. They almost always have a stomach bulge. They may be petite but the bulge never goes away. Do you know any dieters? Do they carry this stomach bulge?
Following the principles of Correct Weight Loss will result in a flat stomach. Correct Weight Loss is losing fat while preserving your muscle mass. Losing 1 – 2 lbs per week is Correct Weight Loss.
