Mary has a high profile job. She has been working hard to be in the position that she has now. She just got promoted. The challenge is that Mary has even lesser time on her hands now. She has got her sight firmly set on her next promotion and she has got to prove her worth to attain it.
While she has superficial achievements, there is a sense of guilt within her. She has realized that her clothes have been getting tighter. She has still not been able to lose a post pregnancy weight. She keeps re-assuring herself that she will get down to serious exercising once she gets her promotion. But then something else comes up, like it always does.
But don’t take it wrongly. Mary realizes that she should do something. She is getting hints from a tighter clothes everyday!
The challenge is that with career, her kids and her husband, there just isn’t enough of her to go around. There just isn’t enough hours in the day!
This is an excuse that I have heard over and over and over and over again. As you can see, I have heard it a lot! Time is the easiest excuse to get away with when trying to justify not exercising.
“I just don’t have time. I am so busy! I just can’t find time for exercise!” As Mary keeps repeating this to herself and to every one else, she actually started believing it. Repeat a lie to yourself enough times, and you will soon start believing it no matter how outrageous it is!
Mary was not really suffering from a lack of time! She was actually suffering from a lack of prioritization! Exercise comes right at the bottom of her “to do” list. It comes after work, making dinner, children’s homework, the television, Facebook, reading her favourite novel, shopping etc. etc. etc
What do you think will happen if Mary’s doctor suddenly told her that her weight was putting too much strain on her heart and that if she did not lose 10 pounds, she wont leave for more than 3 months. Do you think exercise will move up her priority list? You bet!
We find time for things that we prioritize. Time just will not appear out of nowhere. Your activities will expand to fill the available time that you have. Unless you are seriously making an effort to allocate time slots for it, exercise is not something that is just going to happen to you!
Exercising just is not a priority for some people. And until exercise becomes a priority, time would be one but many excuses that will emerge. It could be your daughter’s exam this month, your sister’s wedding the next month, an important project at work the month after, a visit from the in-laws the month after that, the cat being pregnant and the dog having diarrhea and on and on……
Incidentally, I found out that Obama allocates time for exercise. What’s your excuse? Busier than the president……
Me, you, Mary and Barrack Obama have the same 24 hours in the day. We only get done in the day what we prioritize.
If your excuse for not exercising and losing weight is a lack of time, allocate 3 one hour time slots in a week for exercise. Treat these time slots as sacred. Try your best to resist letting any other activity occupy these slots. By consciously setting it as a high priority activity, it will get done!
