Weight loss is such an overused term that it seems to have lost its value. That’s why we have coined the term “Correct Weight Loss“.
Correct Weight Loss is losing only fat while maintaining your lean body mass and the end result is a well defined body. Conversely Incorrect Weight Loss is when weight loss is achieved by losing both fat and muscles. This can be done via dieting/jogging/swimming without incorporating resistance training.
What is a Well Defined Body
Everyone has a picture in their head of what a beautiful body should look like or what their body should look like at the end of their weight loss efforts. Verbalizing this picture in real life is the big problem. We have been programmed from young to equate a lower number on the scale with an attractive body.
People spend all their efforts to achieve lower digits on the weighing scale. Continuously striving for lower and lower digits on the weighing scale results in a body like that of the lady on the right of the picture.
A well defined body shape as depicted by the lady on the left, is the end result of Correct Weight Loss.
A Well Defined Body Shape for Women

What is your idea of a well defined body shape for women? Look at the pictures of the 2 ladies. Which do you find has a more attractive body? There is no doubt that some will find the lady on the right with an appealing body but my guess is that most men and women would prefer the lady on the left.
A well defined body shape for women approaches the shape of the “hourglass” as that of the lady on the left. The shoulders should be squared and wide enough in proportion to the hips such that it gives the illusion of a slim waist. Notice how the lady on the right has extremely drooping and narrow shoulders.
Although Incorrect Weight Loss may also result in a slim waist, it also ALWAYS results in narrow, drooping shoulders. So although a lady can achieve a smaller waist by dieting or starving, it is not visually noticeable because the shoulders are narrow. The narrow shoulders also cause the hips to look un-proportionally large!
A Well Defined Body Shape for Men
A well defined body shape for men is one that approaches the coveted “V” shape. Look at the 2 men in the picture. Which body shape is more appealing?
I believe that most people will find the man on the right with the more attractive body shape. Incidentally, this picture is of identical twins who have undergone different training regiments. The one on the right has a training regiment that focuses on resistance training while the one on the left has a regiment that focuses on a lot of long distance running.
The man on the right has a “V” shaped body. Although he incorporates resistance training into his regiment, he is not a serious bodybuilder. Notice how the wider shoulders give the impression of a smaller waist although the waist size of both men are the SAME.
This again shows the effects of Incorrect Weight Loss. Jogging/swimming/dieting is not the solution for sculpting a well defined body. It may allow you to lose a few pounds but it will never give you the body shape or definition that will make heads turn.
What is the Cause of Incorrect Weight Loss
Incorrect Weight Loss is a result of reduced calorie diets without any element of resistance training. Most women and some men are guilty of this. Most women just hate exercise and try to beat the system by cutting down on food instead of sweating it out.
Weight loss via jogging/swimming or any other form of cardio without resistance training is also Incorrect Weight Loss. More men and some women are unknowingly doing this. They embark on the exercise program with good intentions, not knowing that it will not result in a well defined body shape.

You’re really right about the resistance training. You can actually lose muscle running. Look at professional marathoners.
BTW I love your blog!
I concur with the new term, but for years have had clients dismiss the term “weight loss” altogether and focus upon “body contouring” and “body fat loss while retaining/gaining muscle”. the term “diet” is also replaced with “proper nutrition”. A change in mindset in the way this challenge is approached does wonders for clients’ results, both quantitatively and in longevity of the results. Thanks, DrDavidRobinson4Health.com
