Weight Loss Myths – Acai Berry for Weight Loss?

There has been a lot of hype about Acai (pronounced “ah-sigh-ee”) Berry as a magical elixir for weight loss. Apparently the devious marketers are using Oprah’s name to promote the Acai Berry as a weight loss solution.

I was shocked the other day when a lady came to me and asked if Acai Berry would work for weight loss. She told me that she had read on the internet that it works wonders. And no exercise needed………..and its also recommended by Oprah, so it seems.

Sales of acai products catapulted to $13.5 million last year from $435,000 two years previously.

The acai craze didn’t begin but was fueled by discussions on the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” where at least two of her experts — dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone and heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz — have mentioned the so-called superfood.

Neither suggested acai was a weight-loss product.

Apparently lawyers from Harpo Production (Oprah’s production company) are going after all the companies that are using Oprah’s and Dr Oz’s name to market this product.

As we have always stated, there is no short-cut when it comes to weight loss. For weight loss, SLOW is FAST and FAST is SLOW.

Attempt to use a quick fix and you will spend more time reaching your goal then if you just attempt to do it right from the start!

Acai Berry is a superfood. It has phenomenal amounts of antioxidants and this can only be a plus to health. Take it for its nutritional benefits but not for weight loss purposes.

  1. This is a good article, but I think people will jump on the bandwagon and assume that just drinking acai berry juice and eating them will help them lose the weight. This can provide the proper diet for weightloss and proper exercise will help to increase peoples results. Effecient weightloss can not be achieved without diet and exercise.

    Thanks Robert for the feedback. We all know the nutritional health benefits of this superfood and I would encourage anyone to tak eit for its superb antioxidant properties. But it seems to be getting some bad publicity because it is touted as the magical elixir for weight loss. What are your thoughts about this?

  3. I agree with you on this – acai is a very good food source, but certainly not a weight loss product as such. It’s actually being classed as a superfood now, which suggests it is a very high nutritonal value, but there is definitely a lot of misinformation regarding it’s powers as a weight loss aid.
    Slow and steady is the best way to lose weight – it’s a lifestyle thing, not a “flash in the pan”

    There is a lot of hype behind acai berry juice and not without reason. Because this berry was thought to be rich with concentrations of antioxidants, you will find that a lot of research has gone into it. The acai fruit is found to have a lot of different substances. Anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are both great antioxidants that help get rid of free radicals from the body are present in it. To help fight diseases and slow down the aging process, there is a need to have a diet rich in antioxidants.

  5. Thanks for your valuable input. I have no doubts that the acai berry is a superfood with very potent antioxidant properties. The only point put across here is that it should not be touted as “the” solution for losing weight. Weight loss requires exercise and a healthy diet. A good dose of supplementation like the acai berry would help but it won’t make or break.

  6. Fruits, herbs, fresh juices, and protein shakes can really burned fats. And that it is safe that taking any weight loss pills or some weight loss drinks. It is better to just drink and eat fresh fruits to lessen weight.

  7. Thanks for your comment. You should be careful though as liquid calories could add up very quickly. Fruit juices while healthy are full of calories and sugar. Why not eat the fruit with all the fibre, as nature had intended them to be eaten. Look forward to hearing from you.

    Innocent people are bound to see and believe the things presented by media and news without giving that a second thought.

  9. Yes a lot of hype on the various quick fix diets is because of the media and news. People are on the lookout for the holy grail of weight loss and when something is mentioned in the news, they throw caution aside and embrace it as the ultimate weight loss solution.

  11. Actually Acai is effective only if you are ready to do other essential activites for weight loss, like running and cardio too. Only acai is not useful.

  12. Hello, you can lose a lot of weight with acai but you have to follow a fitness routine.Otherwise it will take quite a lot of time to see some results.
