Weight Loss or a Well Defined Body Shape

by admin on March 30, 2009

abs 2 (Courtesy of stock.xchng by scottsnyde)A lot of people are just too caught up with dropping digits on the weighing scale. A lot of women and many men who are trying to get in shape, are obsessed with a weight number that they have in their minds. They believe that when they reach this weight number, they will have the body that they will be satisfied with.

Ask someone wanting to lose weight, the following question. “Are you trying to achieve a “certain number” on a weighing scale or are you trying to achieve a “body shape” that is attractive to the eye?”. Or you could also ask, “Are you trying to achieve “weight loss” or a “well defined body”?

A lot of people, when asked that question, answer, “Off course I want to achieve a well defined body shape!”. But then they say, “I will achieve that body shape when I weigh 50kgs or 55kgs!” It happens almost every time without fail!

Will dropping digits on the weighing scale actually yield an attractive or well defined body shape? Our minds have a picture of the bodies that we yearn for. We just don’t have the vocabulary to describe this picture in our heads. Instead we use numbers on a weighing scale to equate this to an attractive body shape.

It’s not anybody’s fault for being caught up with the weighing scales as we are brainwashed from young to equate a lower weight to an attractive body.

bodyshape-2 The picture on the furthermost left is what we  would define as an “hourglass” shape. The one on the right lacks any real shape. Both ladies in these pictures do not really have a weight problem. The one on the right is really skinny. Which body shape looks more appealing?

Blindly aiming for a particular weight goal via dieting or starvation will yield weight loss but will it really yield a body shape that turns heads when one walks pass?

In order to achieve an attractive body shape, one still needs to lose weight but this weight loss must come from the loss of body fat only! Lean body mass must be maintained. Without maintaining one’s lean body mass, one would probably end up like the lady on the right! It is the muscle mass that gives the body its shape. Without muscle mass, the body looks like a skeleton with clothes. This is because when a lot of muscle mass has been lost, the shape of the body takes after the shape of the skeleton. And as you know, the skeleton lacks any real voluptuous curves.

Amen to all that. You are totally right about body shape vs. weight on the scale… it really boils down to esthetics for most people, and I’d have to say that what’s found to be most attractive is not SKINNY per se but FIT and in SHAPE…. (aka: with some shape).

great post… definitely keep ‘em coming!!
thanks

I believe that this is the one thing that most people are confused about. People actually want a shapely body but don’t know how to measure it. Being so exposed to the weight scales, people use that to achieve their dream bodies. Just blindly getting body weight down without bothering if its fat or muscle loss is a recipe for rebound weight gain. Losing fat while maintaining or building muscles is what we call correct weight loss. How do you teach your clients about losing weight correctly?
