|

In this series of articles, we will try to uncover the mystery behind the problem that affects over 90% of the women of the world. Cellulite!

What is cellulite? What causes it? With so many solutions out there, what works and what doesn’t? We hope to give a science based analysis of one of the biggest problems plaguing the modern woman!

According to Dr Lionel Bissoon who is the best-selling author of the book “The Cellulite Cure”, the word cellulite is of French origin. In fact, it was introduced in 1923 by French authors Alquier and Paviot. Cellulite became a house hold name for most women in 1972. That’s when Nicole Ronsard’s best-selling book called “Cellulite: Those Lumps, Bumps and Bulges You Couldn’t Loose Before” made headlines.

Dr Bissoon further elaborates of how cellulite in earlier times was a mark of wealth, high social status, attractiveness and sexiness. This association between social status and cellulite was clear in nude Victorian paintings. In these paintings, women did not have fitness model body’s. These chubby women strutted their cellulite full thighs with pride.

Cellulite describes the occurrence of trapped fat under the layer of the skin that causes a dimpling effect of the skin. The dimpling effect is often irregular and patchy. Sometimes it is also synonymous with the term “Orange Peel”.

90% of adolescent women have cellulite.

Cellulite occurs on the hips, thighs and buttocks. More often than not, it also occurs on the back of the arms, below the armpits and even on the chest.

Cellulite very seldom occurs in men for reasons which would be elaborated in the next article.

Cellulite can be mistaken for obesity but it is not related. Obesity can also occur in lean women. In the next article, we will touch on why cellulite is caused and how it forms. So until then, we hope that this sheds some light on this mysterious phenomenon that women go to the ends of the earth to overcome. With the scientific information in hand, you would be able to better deal with it.
