jogging 2I guess this is the excuse we get from lots of people when we talk about exercise. As a practising doctor, I dish out a lot about the importance of exercise in the prevention of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. I must say though, after we go through the options of medication and get to the point of diet and exercise, is just about when everyone’s eyes become glazed. You just know they have shut off and frequently they mumble something about lack of time.

So, just how do we work around this eternal problem of ” I don’t have the time” ? We all have the same 24 hours in a day. As a working mom with 2 kids, I feel quite qualified to talk about this issue! When I come home from work, my kids practically fall all over me (but I do love it!!!). And yes, like a dutiful wife and mother, I do come home and cook dinner every day. So I really do not have that much of time. Getting my exercise done in the evenings is quite out of the question as my kids command my full attention (what with getting them bathed, fed and making sure homework is completed!). As a result of this, I have to get up earlier in the morning to get in my day’s exercise. This is done diligently 4 times a week, 45 mins per session. The way I see it is that I really don’t have a choice if I want the benefits of the exercise. The alternative is to skip the exercise, sleep in longer and put on weight. Or take medications to lose weight, which can have severe side effects. So skip the television at night, sleep earlier and get up 45 mins earlier 4 times a week. Alternatively, get 2 sessions done on the weekends and 2 during the week days, so that you only get up earlier twice a week.

Either way, like I said earlier, we all have the same 24 hours a day. I find it difficult to accept excuses which say that a person cannot spare 45 mins 4 times a week. It only works up to 3 measly hoursĀ a week for exercise!! I am sure everyone can spare this, at least. The benefits that one gets from the exercise far outweighs the sacrifice of getting up early. One thing I can be absolutely sure of is that if you take my advice now, you definitely will remember me when you age gracefully and healthily!!! And that is the way I would love to be remembered.
