Is Life Supposed to Be Comfortable

Life (Courtesy of stock.xchng by jan-willem)Most of the human race were hunter gatherers 12,000 thousand years ago. Life was tough. Survival depended on being able to find the next meal. Conservation of energy was essential in pre-historic times when food was scarce and available sporadically. For this reason, our bodies were designed to store fat and conserve energy. There was no guarantee from where the next meal would come from.

Hard work consumed energy and the body was programmed to resist it. The only hard work required was to chase after dinner. Searching for comfort is an inbuilt program. It allowed the human race to survive until this day. This action was spontaneous and instantaneous.

There used to be a good balance between hard work and comfort. We were forced to work hard for our food. Unfortunately, the balance has been lost in modern times. We now have very few opportunities to do hardwork. This is creating a huge imbalance in our bodies which has evolved with a balance of physical stress and rest.

Physical stress in modern times is exercise. It helps build stronger bones and muscles. It helps improve balance. Stronger bones and muscles ensure that we are not susceptible to falls. Exercise stimulates the brain to release useful mood lifting brain chemicals.

Unfortunately, the modern man is plagued with all forms of other stresses, most of which are mental.  Life is a dialetic. When you physically work hard, you get the best rest. But more importantly, physical work helps improve your psychological state as well due to the release of all the mood lifting brain chemicals.
